Session Scale-Up: Financial and organisational issues and solutions
December 2, 11:15-13:00
Shaping up to scale-up, lessons learned so far
ir. Sander den Hoedt LLM, CEO and co-founder Delmic
Scaling up is often presented as a linear success story that fluently leads to hypergrowth. The reality is that even starting on the road towards scaling up already requires a lot of hard work and soul searching. In order to make sure the message and the focus are just right, internal structure and communication often needs to change drastically.
In this talk I will give an impression of how Delmic has grown over the past years – and in the process take away the illusion of a linear success story. I will then go deeper into the process we have gone through since pivoting in 2018, towards the life sciences market, where we stand now and what challenges still lie ahead. Special attention will be given to the unique case of high-tech hardware development: the additional complexity of building products that may take years to come to fruition, while dealing with long sales cycles and high costs.
Sander has a background in corporate law (Leiden) and Applied Physics (Delft). He co-founded Delmic right after his studies in 2011 and has been the CEO of the company since the start. He has led the company through several developments, including the launch of four product lines and raising several funding rounds, both from investors and public money.
Next to Delmic, Sander regularly advises start-up companies, particularly those in the very early stage. In his free time, he likes to go out for dinner, workout, run and read.
