Speaker bio

Dr. Rui Carvalho is the Microfluidics Project Manager at Surfix. Rui graduated from the University of Lisbon in 2010 in Chemistry. He started his career as an R&D Scientist at Micronit in 2011, and in 2015, as a Marie Curie Fellow, together with Micronit and the Zuilhof group at Wageningen University started a PhD on local coatings for microfluidics. He defended his PhD in 2017 and joined Surfix as an R&D Scientist, and since 2020 as Microfluidics Project Manager. Inventor of a growing number of international patents (>5), he aims to enhance manufacturing and performance of LoC/PoC devices.

At Surfix, we developed “Coat & Close”, which allows fast fabrication of bonded and coated microfluidic devices with hydrophilic, antifouling channels, enabling capillary flow control and autonomous operation. Coat & Close can also be used to create hybrid devices by integrating (polymer) microfluidics with other materials such as glass parts or silicon biochips.
